Establishment of enterprises and missions
The company "Belgrade Metro and Train" was founded with the aim of enabling the realization of the Belgrade Metro and BG Train network project by 2033. Along with the planned four city lines of the BG train, it is also planned to connect the municipalities of Lazarevac, Mladenovac and Obrenovac with a regular and frequent BG train. Through transit-oriented development, it will be ensured that the city of Belgrade has an even and sustainable development in the entire territory in the coming decades. Predictions are that by 2033 (SMART plan 2017), the number of vehicles on the road network in Belgrade will increase by 50%, in case there is no improvement of public city transport in the form of high-capacity rail systems. The task is to increase the high share of public transport in the total number of trips by citizens of Belgrade from the current 48% to over 50%.
The future metro and the current and future BG train will be carefully integrated with bus, trolleybus, taxi transport and especially with the improved tram subsystem, as well as with new trends such as limo service and bicycle systems.
The development of the rail system of public transport, along with disincentive measures towards road traffic based on fossil fuels, will significantly improve environmental protection and lead to Belgrade as a green city.
Technology and expertise
The metro system is a technologically very complex and demanding undertaking, both from the aspect of construction, as well as from the aspect of exploitation and maintenance. The construction of such systems also drives the development of the economy. The goal is to maximize the involvement of domestic industry and construction in the construction of the metro and the development of the BG train, to improve technical knowledge and to acquire new technologies. The development of the metro system will enable raising the level of knowledge and skills involved in the project and will create a technical and personnel base for future projects.
With such plans, a team of experts is created capable of independently developing, designing and leading the future phases of the development of the metro system, as well as monitoring and implementing new technologies in cooperation and with the consent of the Founder. Long-term effects and planning
The experience of other cities shows that the development of the metro system is a long-term continuous process. The new lines not only serve certain parts of the city, but with the transfer stations of the previous lines, they increase their utilization and make the whole system more efficient. Already in the design phase of the first two metro lines, it is necessary to plan the construction of a third line that would cover the southeastern and southwestern parts of the city.
In addition to the basic functions of transport (connecting the place of residence with the place of work and education, access to important points in the city, urban centers, economic zones, tourist and recreational attractions), the metro allows:
- ease and safety of movement for citizens,
- more efficient functioning of facilities and zones for investors,
- comfortable accessibility to destinations for tourists and recreationists
The metro concept enables the activation of significant territorial capital and optimal use of the city's priority potentials.
Belgrade among European metropolises
The metro project can influence the elevation of the City of Belgrade to a high ranking level among the metropolitan cities and capitals of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Planned development contributes to a sustained economy, advanced technology, greater territorial cohesion, urban identity and strengthening the city's position among European metropolises.
