The contract for the purchase of two tunnel boring machines (TBM) that will be used for the construction of the tunnel section of Line 1, phase 1 of the Belgrade metro was solemnly signed today in the premises of the JKP "Beogradski metro i voz" Belgrade.
The contract was signed by representatives of two renowned Chinese companies: Han Zhiping, manager of the Metro Line 1 project on behalf of PowerChina and Cao Jianfeng on behalf of CRCHI (China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited), in the presence of Andrej Mladenović, director of the "Belgrade Metro and Train" PUK. This event represents a significant milestone in the realization of one of the largest and most significant infrastructure projects in Serbia - the construction of a modern metro system in Belgrade.
Andreja Mladenović, director of the "Belgrade Metro and Train" PUC, emphasized on this occasion: "Today's signing of the contract is an essential step towards entering the phase of concrete works on the ground. The acquisition of TBM machines means that we are ready for the excavation of tunnels and the realization of the metro that Belgrade deserves. CRCHI is the world's largest manufacturer of these machines, and currently more than 15 moles are engaged in various infrastructure projects in Europe."
Han Jiping stated that PowerChina partners are proud to have the opportunity to participate in the construction of the first metro system in Belgrade and in the region. "Today's signing is the backbone of the contractor's works and an introduction to the preparation of the construction of the metro. Our goal is to justify the trust shown, strengthen and improve the functionality of the traffic, all with the support of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, PUK "Belgrade Metro and Train" and project managers, but also with the understanding of the local population," added J. Han.
Cao Jianfeng from CRCHI presented the results and opportunities of this company as a global leader in the production of TBM to the audience. "The machines we deliver represent the most modern technology in the field of tunnel engineering. We are sure that they will contribute to the efficient and safe excavation of metro tunnels, and work on the excavation of tunnels for the future metro in Belgrade will be one of our priority projects. It is important to say that we are very committed to respecting all technical, environmental and safety standards, with the aim of making this project an example of good practice." concluded Đ. Bye
The TBM machines for the Belgrade metro will weigh 2,000 tons and have a diameter of almost 10 meters and represent the pinnacle of modern technology in the field of underground construction. Their delivery and installation are expected in April and June 2026. These so-called "moles" work with a high degree of precision, minimal impact on the environment and with a high level of safety during operation. With this contract, the PowerChina and CRCHI companies combine their global experience and technological leadership in order to contribute to the construction of an efficient, safe and reliable metro system in Belgrade, in accordance with the highest international standards.
The construction of the subway in Belgrade is of strategic importance for the Republic of Serbia, as it will contribute to better connectivity, reduction of traffic jams and environmental protection. By signing this contract, the City of Belgrade is one step closer to joining the society of modern European metropolises with a developed urban transport system.
